Science-Metrix to measure African science for the African Union Commission

Published on August 1 2012

The African Union Commission’s African Observatory for Science, Technology and Innovation (AOSTI) has recently mandated Science-Metrix to measure the current state of science and technology (S&T) in the Member States of the African Union. We are delighted at this opportunity to work with an Africa-based client. It also means that Science-Metrix will now be producing bibliometrics indicators on S&T activities at the level of two continents: Europe and now Africa.

Science-Metrix is excited to work with AOSTI to develop and implement bibliometric indicators that will characterize S&T across the range and diversity of African countries. These indicators will help set the foundation for a periodic assessment of the output and impact of African research and development (R&D).

This project will contribute to a range of recent initiatives to advance a minimum set of science, technology and innovation indicators across Africa. Thus, this work will help address one of the most critical challenges when it comes to decision-making relating to African S&T programs, initiatives and outcomes – namely, lack of data on R&D.
